Course Description:

The Basic Occupational Education (BOE) Program for Retail and Business Services at Douglas College is designed for students who have a barrier to learning and/or employment. The program is self-paced and students will learn the skills needed to obtain entry-level employment in a variety of work environments including retail, wholesale, and warehouse worksites.

Students train for retail, wholesale, and office positions by learning duties such as data entry, filing, photocopying, sorting mail, and basic retail functions, including shipping and receiving, stocking merchandise, and customer service. 

 

Program Courses: 

There are no specific program courses, but there are classroom, lab, and work experience components. Students will develop skills in retail merchandising and warehousing, barcoding, customer service, shipping, receiving, and stocking.

 

Course requirements: 

  • Must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

    • Be 19 years old by the end of the first month of the first semester of attendance

    • Be 17 years old on the first day of the first semester of attendance and has not been in school for at least one year

    • Graduated from a British Columbia secondary school or equivalent school system

    • Be one course short of British Columbia secondary school graduation

    • Has completed a certificate or equivalent from a special needs program and has been in school for 12 years

  • Submit a transcript from an official secondary or post-secondary school

  • Must show proof of English language proficiency

  • Must participate in an admissions interview to determine suitability for the program and for working in an applied learning setting

  • Submit an application online through EducationPlaner or EducationPlanner if the student is currently attending high school in British Columbia or Yukon

  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate fully in the program

Course Description:

The Basic Occupational Education (BOE) Program for Food Services at Douglas College is designed for students who have a barrier to learning and/or employment. The program is self-paced and students will train to perform entry-level food services duties.

Skills that students will typically learn include dishwashing, bussing, kitchen maintenance, safety and sanitation, and salad bar preparation. In addition, students may learn basic food preparation and customer service duties. Students will also train on-campus in the College cafeteria and gain practical experience in a variety of food service facilities in geographic areas serviced by the College.

Course Description:

The Basic Occupational Education (BOE) Program for Electronics and General Assembly at Douglas College is designed for students who have a barrier to learning and/or employment. The program is self-paced and students will train to perform assembly work in the high-tech electronics field or mechnical assembly industries.

Skills that students will typically learn include electronic component preparation, printed circuit board assembly, soldering, cable and wire preparation, and hardware and general assembly. Students will also have two four-week work experiences where they will be placed in a manufacturing firm in the Lower Mainland to continue training. 

 

Program Courses: 

There are no specific program courses, but there are classroom, lab, and two four-week work experience components. Students will learn how to prepare electronic components, assemble printed circuit boards, solder, prepare cables and wires, and assemble hardware.

 

Course requirements: 

  • Must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

    • Be 19 years old by the end of the first month of the first semester of attendance

    • Be 17 years old on the first day of the first semester of attendance and has not been in school for at least one year

    • Graduated from a British Columbia secondary school or equivalent school system

    • Be one course short of British Columbia secondary school graduation
